Flokk’s design competition returns to Gothenburg

The second edition of our HÅG Capisco design competition sees five more architect firms create unique HÅG Capisco designs as part of it's 40 year anniversary celebrations.

Flokk recently hosted the second edition of its HÅG Capisco design competition, bringing together creativity and collaboration to highlight the versatility of this iconic chair celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024. Building on the success of the first competition in Stockholm earlier this year, this time we took the event to Gothenburg, showcasing innovative designs from some of Gothenburg’s finest interior architects.

The second edition of the event featured designs from Kaka Arkitekter, Kaminsky Arkitektur, Volvo Cars Workplace Design Team, Arkitektbyrån Design, and Kanozi. The brief was simple but challenging: take a “blank” HÅG Capisco chair and transform it using textile and metal paints, provided as part of a creative kit. The architects had two weeks to complete their designs, blending artistry with the functional design of the chair.

The entries were unveiled during an evening event at Flokk’s Gothenburg showroom, attended by architects, resellers, and close collaborators. The atmosphere was lively, with attendees engaging in conversations about the innovative designs and the inspirations behind them.

About: To celebrate Capisco's 40th anniversary, Kanozi Architects created a recycled tribute to the chair, its design, and collaboration. Using a reused chair upholstered with braided recycled fabric samples, everyone at Kanozi contributed to the braiding process. The Capisco chair, designed with ergonomics and sustainability in mind, embodies timeless thinking. By reusing materials and involving the entire team, we highlight its core values, showcasing how collaboration and creative reuse are key to a sustainable future.

A chair celebrates XL - by Arkitektbyrån Design

About: Each stitch honours the Capisco chair's heritage. Our embroidered grid with "XL" carries layered meanings: XL signifies 40 in Roman numerals, marking the chair's 40-year legacy, and "extra large," reinforcing its timeless, iconic status. The X marks the spot—your seat, supported by Capisco's unique shape. The pattern nods to the fashion world, evoking exclusivity and quality, akin to Louis Vuitton. Through embroidery, we pay tribute to the time, care, and craftsmanship required to create something enduring. This interpretation celebrates Capisco’s history of innovation and ergonomics.

Celebrating a life lived - by Kaminsky Arkitekter

About: Celebrate the years gone by—the life lived, accidents and luck alike. When we mend with care, flaws and tears gain meaning and love. A blemish becomes a reason to refine, a mark of growth through use. After 40 years, only what is untouched remains unchanged; only what has not lived stays the same.

A panel of judges—Matilda Hunyadi, Designer and Founder of Sloydlab, Esa Airas, Managing Director at Gabriel Sweden, and Jessica Borgar, Marketing and Sales at Flokk Sweden—evaluated the designs. The jury awarded first place to Kaka Arkitekter for their chair, “The Cosmopolitan.”

Describing their creation, Kaka Arkitekter said: “Born ready for something bigger! Dressed in neon and blue mascara, Capisco from Røros travels the world to inspire and manifest.” The jury praised the chair for its bold concept and execution, commenting; “It was love at first sight with this design… The details and composition make it a piece that continues to captivate long after the initial impression.”

Alongside the glory, the winning studio received six HÅG Capisco chairs for their office.

Commenting on the event, Johanna Hedström, Vice President Marketing & Digital at Flokk, said: “This competition is a great way to engage with our partners and celebrate the creativity that the HÅG Capisco chair inspires. The energy at the Gothenburg event was fantastic, and it’s been exciting to see the different interpretations of such an iconic piece of furniture.”

The event also acknowledged the legacy of Peter Opsvik, the designer of the HÅG Capisco chair, who passed away earlier this year. This competition reflects not only the enduring appeal of his design but also the vibrant community that it continues to inspire.

Flokk extends its gratitude to all the participants, judges, and guests who made the Gothenburg event a success!
