Flokk's showroom at Skøyen is opening its doors for Skøyen Designfestival on 4–5 September, hosting a number of designers who'll be using the space to present their latest work alongside Flokk's own presentation. Among the guest designers is Norwegian textile designer Kiki Plesner.
Plesner runs Plesner Patterns, a surface pattern design studio working across textile, wallpaper, and tiles, designed and produced in Norway. She works with Norwegian producers including Innvik, Grinakervev, Far-far Cement Tiles and InHouse. Her work has picked up a Red Dot Award for the Heritage throw and been featured in Dezeen. Biophilic design, the idea that natural patterns and materials belong in built spaces, runs through most of what she makes.
At Skøyen, Plesner is presenting several of her fabrics on Flokk furniture, including her Patchwork design shown on an Offecct Font chair and an Offecct Carry-on stool. Patchwork takes the large-scale checks of a traditional patchwork quilt and reworks them into something more contemporary, a design she describes as a tribute to craftsmanship, time, and care.
She's also launching a new fabric, Balloon, at the festival, shown on HÅG Capisco and a new Offecct Font meeting chair. The pattern comes from a simple, analogue process: balloons dipped in paint and pressed onto a surface, producing spontaneous, floral-like imprints, no two exactly alike. The fabric is woven in Norway by Innvik in wool.
"I like the contrast between the unpretentious, ephemeral way the pattern is created and the elaborate, enduring quality it acquires as a wool upholstery fabric," Plesner says.
"I really appreciate that my upholstery textiles are woven at Innvik in Norway. It's fun to collaborate with a Norwegian brand like Flokk and HÅG, creating something local from design through to manufacture. The Balloon design is playful, just like the chair."
Kiki will be hosting a talk in the Flokk showroom on Friday at 1pm on creating fabric patterns inspired by everyday moments and the nature around us, open to anyone at the festival.
The presentation shares the Flokk showroom with Heymat, Tradinno, and Jotun, also exhibiting across the two days.
